Description
The Northern Flicker is a large woodpecker (12"-14"), also known as a common flicker or red-shafted flicker. This female visited our backyard, poking around a feeder for a short while, but they are the only woodpecker to regularly feed on the ground, favoring ants and beetles. The red-shafted flicker is found in the Rocky Mountains. The male sports a red mustache. Both the male and female flash reddish orange under the wings and tail, as can be seen in this photo.
